Songs for Saturday

Autopsy - Fairport Convention (Unhalfbricking, 1969)

Ok my friends I am asking for some advice, this is the only Fairport album I own an I'm rather obsessed with it at the moment and would really like to hear some more but do not know where to start. Can anyone advise me as to which album of theirs I should get next?

Maybe you would like 'What We Did On Our Holidays' their first album to feature Sandy's excellent vocals (I quite like FC's first album but not so keen on Judy Dyble's voice on there). 'What We Did..' features some great songs such as 'Meet On The Ledge' which is a bit of a favourite of mine anyway! It's great when you start getting into someone and have a whole back catalogue to explore, though, isn't it? x

"What We Did on Our Hoidays" is my personal favorite. But "Leige and Leaf" is considered to be their masterpiece.

PS - thanks to this post I've just quickly revisited the first album - much more reminiscent of early Jefferson Airplane, with more male vocals too (and some covers of Joni/Dylan) plus GREAT song 'Time Will Show The Wiser'... And yes I like some of 'Liege and Lief' too but it does seem more trad folk. Oh, the agony of choice, eh! x

From a not too dissimilar part of the woods, do you know Pentangle? This might be of interest:

If you like great '60s folk-rock you might enjoy the recordings Sandy Denny made with another group before she joined Fairport Convention. The original album's worth plus a lot of outtakes have been on CD a few times under the title Sandy & The Strawbs - All Our Own Work. It's one of my favorite CDs with many great and original tracks. It was all recorded in 1967 but not released at the time (except as demos to show off the original songs within the music biz). Leige & Leif is a classic but can take some effort getting into if you're not familiar with traditional British folk music from which it draws heavily.
